Earth Day Every Day

On this Earth Day, enjoy God’s presence in God’s creation.  Put your phone away, turn off your music, and really tune in to the world.  Witness it with all your senses.

It was a beautiful day in Wilmington!  Take a walk on the riverfront with me.  Look up and drink in the seemingly infinite depth of the sky.  Notice how the gradients of blue color lighten nearer the horizon, and the contrast of the white fluffy clouds lit up from behind by the sunshine. Shades of green line the riverbanks as new grass sprouts and trees begin to fill in their leaves for the summer.  White, yellow, pink, purple and red flowers are everywhere you look. Listen to the birdsong all around you.  Whistling seagulls and melodic songbirds mingle near the water.  Hear the whisper of the wind as it rustles through the marsh grass and presses the river water into rhythmic ripples that softly slap against the pilings of the boardwalk under your feet.  Feel the sun warm your skin and enjoy the heat of the day as it relaxes your muscles.  Move into the shade and feel your skin cool in the breeze. Take a deep breath and notice the sweet perfume of spring flowers mingled with the tang of the ocean.  The scent is so strong you can actually taste the salt and freshness in the air. Drink all this in and feel your life merge with the life all around you.  Feel alive.

Each day is a new and amazing creation. As Richard Rohr says in his book Falling Upward, ” whatever good, true, or beautiful things we can say about humanity or creation we can say of God exponentially.  God is the beauty of creation and humanity multiplied to the infinite power.” Each part of the world is different and beautiful in its own special way.  God made all this so you could experience physically His presence and majesty.  Make time to enjoy the part of the world you are in, not just today, but every day.
